Rumfitt is not afraid to really get into the darkest parts of humanity, and you may want to look away while reading, but it is vital that you don’t. This WILL disturb you until the end of your days!

This collection of horror and scifi stories written by indigenous authors is chilling, unsettling, and mythic! These stories are diverse in authors, emotion, and conclusions. It’s hard to pick, but some of my favorite standouts were "White Hills" by Rebecca Roanhorse, "Navajos Don't Wear Elk Teeth" by Conley Lyons, “Hunger” by Phoenix Boudreau, “Snakes Are Born in the Dark'' by D. H. Trujillo, "Dead Owls" by Mona Susan Power, “Collections” by Amber Blaeser-Wardzala, and "Limbs'' by Waubgeshig Rice. All are beautifully impactful stories touching on the horrors of colonialism and loss, community, cultural wisdom, connection, and legacy.

Published: S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books - September 12th, 2023

I’ve been trying to think of all the things I can say about this book but know anything I say will come up short to truly do justice to this story. Mona Awad is a dark and twisted genius who never fails to keep me on my toes! ROUGE interweaves skincare regimens, roses, jellyfish, and Tom Cruise into spectacularly horrifying fugue states that will accelerate you into delicious madness. Awad’s examination of beauty standards, mother-daughter relationships, grief, obsession, and memory is razor-sharp. Her writing is subtle, beautiful, and continues to be just some of the best storytelling out there. I’m always amazed by what her mind creates!

Whalefall: A Novel By Daniel Kraus Cover Image
$27.99
ISBN: 9781665918169
Availability: Likely on our shelves now
Published: MTV Books - August 8th, 2023

This is truly one of my favorite books I’ve ever read! WHALEFALL by Daniel Kraus begins with the teenage Jay, gearing up to go on a solo deep dive off Monastery Beach to retrieve his father’s bones from the ocean so that his family might forgive him. While below the surface he is swallowed by a sperm whale and has only an hour to figure out how to get out and resurface before his oxygen runs out. What follows is an otherworldly, claustrophobic, spiritual, visceral character study of reckoning with your past and being able to imagine a future. WHALEFALL is incredibly moving with powerful tropes of bildungsroman, survival fiction, and horror. Guilt, forgiveness, regret, broken relationships, overcoming childhood trauma, life’s purpose, death, rebirth, WHALES! I’m still at the bottom of the ocean with Jay after reading this book and don’t expect to come up for air soon!

This debut is utterly extraordinary in style, plot, and theme—I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I finished. Wren’s new husband Lewis loves her dearly; she allows him to see the beauty in life. But their would-be happy marriage takes a turn when he begins an incurable metamorphosis into a great white shark. As Lewis’ path moves farther and farther away from Wren’s, she returns to her childhood and looks towards her future without him. This book explores love, grief, transformation, pain, and art in all its forms. Habeck's writing is stunning, and this book is unlike anything I’ve read before!

I absolutely loved the insider-ness to this book! Written specifically for a queer audience and highlighting all the petty, tangled, exhausting drama of bougie queer relationships. This novel was uniquely enjoyable, because I think traditionally it would have been watered down to attract straight readers. But queer literature doesn't need to do that, and I'm glad Davis avoided that route.

How can we find camaraderie in the very thing that so often slights us?" It's so enjoyable to revisit some of my favorite films through these fresh lenses!

Our Wives Under the Sea: A Novel By Julia Armfield Cover Image
$26.99
Out of stock at the moment; would not arrive before the holidays.
ISBN: 9781250229892
Published: Flatiron Books - July 12th, 2022

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield is a gorgeous book about discovery, loss, grief, and memory. Told in alternating chapters between Leah - a deep sea explorer who's been at the ocean's floor for six months - and her wife Miri - who's been waiting for her to resurface. Armfield’s prose is ominous, beautiful, haunting, and a little disturbing. This is already one of my favorite novels of 2022, maybe ever. And really, I can’t stop thinking about it!
