A woman appears at the exact moment that Ray Eccles is hit by a dying seagull and he spends the rest of his life trying to recreate the beauty and connection he felt in that one moment. Jennifer, the woman, spends her mild life wondering what more there could be and almost finds out. Every sentence in this book is perfect.

There is nothing interesting about Ray Eccles. He knows it himself. On the morning of his fortieth birthday, he goes for a walk because he's just learned of a dormant Second World War explosive offshore, and he's the kind of man who thinks a bomb might be good company.
