Grub Street

Grub Street at Newtonville Books!

We're very happy to announce a partnership with everyone's favorite non-profit writing center, Grub Street.  Grub will be holding their vaunted workshops weeknights from 6-9pm at the bookstore.

Fiction II: Section B

10 Wednesdays from 6:00-9:00pm at Newtonville Books. Begins January 11th.

Whether your model is Carver or Coover, Kafka or Krantz, your voice and narratives are unique. That doesn't mean you don't have to revise. Fiction II is designed to give intermediate/more experienced writers, and those with workshop experience, the intensive review and analysis they need to make their stories deeper and sharper. Classes are primarily focused on discussion of student work, but may also include writing exercises and instruction on craft issues that arise in participants' writing. In addition to the class's comments, you will get in-depth written feedback from the instructor. The goal is to write and revise two short stories or self-contained novel chapters, up to 25 pages each. While this course focuses on short stories only, and novelists may find the creation of self-contained narratives useful, workshopping novel chapters is discouraged. Please bring a copy of Best American Short Stories 2011 (edited by Geraldine Brooks and Heidi Pitlor) to the first class.
Instructor: James Scott

Since its inception in 1997, Grub Street has become Boston’s literary hotspot, teaching over 10,000 Boston-area writers of all levels, building an audience for great literature, and adding to the creative economy of the city by putting over $1 million into the pockets of local emerging writers.  The organization sponsors two outreach initiatives: The Memoir Project, which brings seniors together to craft memoirs and create a living history of Boston, and the Young Adult Writers Program, which offers free instruction to teens from all over Massachusetts in fiction, poetry and narrative nonfiction and awards eighteen fellowships for intensive study every summer for two weeks.

Here's a little more about Grub:

Grub Street is a non-profit writing center dedicated to nurturing writers and connecting readers with the wealth of writing talent in the Boston area.

We have two vital roles. We support writers at every stage of their development by offering writing classes, fellowships, employment, and networking opportunities, and by promoting the work of local authors. Equally important, we enrich the lives of Boston-area residents by introducing them to a community of fellow readers and writers through author-hosted book clubs, informal discussions, movie screenings and more.

Grub Street builds on Boston's proud literary tradition by making the city more welcoming for writers, and more inspiring and culturally alive for all of us.

I hope you'll take advantage of this wonderful addition to the Newtonville experience.
